Day 71, July 20, 2014

Today is Sunday Catch-Up Day!  Use your reading chart (or this blog) to find the chapters you still need to read to be caught up through:

Helaman 7

or:

If you are up-to-date with your reading, take time to study Helaman 5.

To ponder:
What did Helaman name his sons?  Why?  Whose name have you taken upon yourself?  How were the Lamanites converted through their ministry?

  1. First, I think Helaman 5 is one of my new favorite chapters in the Book of Mormon! I love that Helaman explains to his sons, Nephi and Lehi, exactly why and where their names come from. He tells them: Remember your names that you may remember them (Nephi and Lehi--their grandparents--but I'm not sure how many great great greats--would be in front of their grandfather's names!), that they might remember their works, and that they might remember that they were good. And then Helaman counsels his son to also do these things and to be good. They followed the counsel of their father, and their faces were "as the faces of angels"!

I have taken the name of Christ upon myself; as such, I have been invited to pattern my life after Christ's life. I strive to do this every day--I make a lot of mistakes and take some steps backwards, but I try to get right back up, repent and move forward. Each day, each moment provides a new opportunity to do this.

  2. I'm all caught up now! And BOY was my blog post for yesterday's reading long... TOO long. LOL. I'm getting so excited about the scriptures that I'm finding inspiration in every little verse!

Helaman 5 is a favorite of mine, too. I wrote a lot about it the other day, so I won't reiterate it all here. But to answer the thought question, I've heard in talks before about family names and honoring them through your actions. Just think about what it does to a family's name when a person does something grossly horrible, or the opposite. People pay attention to these things and don't forget it! So it's important to always stand for what's right and bring those blessings to your family.

What I really wanted to touch on was Helaman 5:10 and Helaman 5:12 (ROCK!).
First, verse 10--the Lord redeems us FROM our sins, not IN our sins! We have to repent so we can be saved! Second, verse 12... it's a scripture mastery if there ever was one! What an incredible promise--if we build on a foundation of Christ, we CANNOT fall! Christ will never be the reason we fail. WE might crumble, but Christ never will. He is endless. He is perfect. And he is strong beyond any force the devil may possess. So much so, that the devil can "have no power over you" when you put Christ first. How amazing.
