Day 18, May 28, 2014

Read:  2 Nephi 26-27
Mark:  2 Nephi 26:8

"Looking for the path to safety in the counsel of prophets makes sense to those with strong faith...the choice is not to take prophetic counsel changes the very ground upon which we stand. It becomes more dangerous.  The failure to take prophetic counsel lessens our power to take inspired counsel in the future.  The best time to have decided to help Noah build the ark was the first time he asked.  Each time he asked after that, each failure to respond would have lessened sensitivity to the Spirit.  And so each time his request would have seemed more foolish, until the rain came.  And then it was too late."  --Elder Henry B. Eyring

To ponder:
How does following the prophet keep you safe?

  1. I know that it seems that everyday I am saying how much I love the scripture reading for that day--but I really do love the scriptures more each day! :) Each day I feel the Spirit more and it feels good to be doing what is right!

I love every single word of 2 Nephi 26. I especially love verse 25 where it talks about the Lord never sending anyone away, but inviting all to come unto him, and that to do so costs no money. We need to not be afraid to share the gospel; we need to share Nephi's words and help others come unto Christ.

2 Nephi 27 has never before been more clear to me than as I have read and thought about these verses throughout the day. I love that the coming forth of the Book of Mormon is so clearly explained. I love verse 19, where it says the words will be delivered to a man who is not learned and then in 20 the Lord says don't worry, I will give the words to you!

And I love verse 25, where we are reminded that our hearts (not just our words) must be with the Lord. I guess I love every word of 2 Nephi 27 too! :)

As I think about the question for today, on following the prophet to stay safe, this just makes complete sense to me. As we follow the prophet, we don't have to wander or go astray, we know what is expected, we know how to prepare for things to come both spiritually and temporally. All day I have had the Primary song: Follow the Prophet, Follow the Prophet, He knows the way! running through my mind! :)

  2. I also absolutely loved today's reading! My favorite part was when he said that Christ never turns anyone away. The gospel is for EVERYONE. God doesn't discriminate. He loves us all equally and desires for all of us to return to his presence! There was another part, I think in chapter 27, that mentioned that those who turn to him in fear are farther from him. How many people obey out of fear? That's not how God operates! Some religions really hammer down on the fire and brimstone, but what I particularly love about The Book of Mormon and about the restored gospel is the message of LOVE. How many times have we read now that God loves us and will protect us, strengthen us, and never turn away from us in anger? He is the perfect Father, and he wants us to be happy!

I really like the quote for today from Henry B. Eyring. The path to disbelief happens little by little. It starts by finding one little thing not to follow and then more and more it becomes easier to dismiss the warnings, ignore the counsel, and then to just blatantly disobey. Before you know it you doubt the authenticity or even find offense with the words of the prophets and apostles and then lose your way from the church and turn away from God himself.

I have found that by following the prophet that I have a greater sense of inner peace. My life is more manageable, my outlook is more positive, and everything about my life just seems to fall more easily in place. I am so happy with where my life is at right now. Don't get me wrong--we face a LOT of challenges! But I've found that when I'm happier with God and following more closely to the gospel that my burdens really are lighter.

  3. Too often, people (and me) ask for how to do things or what to do in any given circumstance and sometimes we have to search for the answers to those questions on their own. I relish the fact that so many of those questions have already been answered. I can look to the words of the prophets and find the answers to all of the questions that matter. Following the words of the prophets has helped me remain in light and sureness, whereas if I did not have faith in and follow their words I would be confused and weak and walking in darkness. I believe that Heavenly Father would reveal everything to us if He was sure the knowledge would not overwhelm us and that we were ready for such revelation. He does not keep things secret for His gain or entertainment or whatever. He only waits until we grow and get to the place on His path which shows we are ready for such knowledge. He does nothing in the dark.
I would be foolish to expect answers to new questions if I am not yet fully utilizing the answers He has already given.
